Radiotherapy uses precisely shaped beams of radiation to destroy cancer cells while sparing the healthy tissue around them. It is used to cure many cancers, to shrink tumours before surgery, to clean up after surgery, and to relieve pain in advanced disease.

Our centre has delivered more than 90,000 radiotherapy treatments over four decades — for breast, head & neck, lung, cervix, prostate, brain and many other cancers.

Planning (first 2–3 visits)
A CT simulation maps your anatomy in the treatment position. For head-and-neck treatment a soft thermoplastic mask is moulded — it feels like a warm towel and takes minutes. Physicists and the oncologist then design your individual plan.

Daily treatment
Most courses run 10–30 sessions, Monday to Saturday. Each visit takes 10–20 minutes, most of it careful positioning; the beam itself is on for only a couple of minutes and you feel nothing.

Weekly review
The doctor sees you every week during the course to manage skin care, diet and any side effects early.

What a linear accelerator (LINAC) actually is
A LINAC generates high-energy X-ray beams electronically — nothing radioactive is stored inside it. The machine is only "on" during your treatment, arcs around you without touching you, and shapes each beam to the tumour with a computer-controlled collimator whose leaves move like fingers.

Our machine: Varian TrueBeam
The TrueBeam is the same class of accelerator installed in leading metro and international cancer centres. It photographs your internal anatomy before every session (image guidance) and adjusts for millimetre-level accuracy.

Techniques we plan with
3D-CRT — beams shaped to the tumour in three dimensions
IMRT — intensity-modulated beams that paint dose around critical organs
IGRT — daily imaging so the target, not the tattoo, decides the aim
VMAT/RapidArc-class delivery — the beam sweeps in arcs, cutting session times to minutes
Palliative and emergency radiotherapy — single-fraction pain and bleeding control when time matters

The team behind every beam
Every plan is built and checked by a radiation oncologist, a medical physicist and radiotherapy technologists, with independent quality-assurance checks on the machine daily, monthly and annually. You will know your team by name — and the machine is never the doctor; it only carries out a plan made for you.
